Minister Yoon Sang-jick of Trade, Industry & Energy (MOTIE) showed an enthusiastic attitude towards the 1 million car production city project and cluster creation project in Gwangju. The project was given the green light to proceed.

According to the City of Gwangju, Gwangju Mayor Yoon Jang-hyun and Kim Dong-Cheol, a member of the National Assembly, had a meeting with MOTIE Minister Yoon on July 09 at the office of Chairman of Trade, Industry and Energy Committee of the National Assembly.

Mayor Yoon asked Minister Yoon to cooperate with Gwangju to prioritize the 1 million car production city project and cluster creation project in the preliminary feasibility study, which MOTIE gives to the Ministry of Strategy and Finance by July 20.

"Although KRW 63.2 billion of support including designing the industrial complex and R&D costs is required to begin the project from 2015, Gwangju has a difficulty in funding because the preliminary feasibility study has not been performed yet. MOTIE would reflect KRW 5 billion of designing the industrial complex and R&D costs in order to promote the project immediately after drawing feasibility report by prioritizing the preliminary feasibility study," said Mayor Yoon.

"Although the 1 million car production city project is a national policy project of President Park, no visible plan has been carried out yet. MOTIE and Gwangju should work together in order to execute the preliminary feasibility study and to promote the project earnestly in the first half of next year," said lawmaker Kim Dong-Cheol.

"Since the 1 million car production city project is not the sole issue of MOTIE, Gwangju should closely cooperate with not only us but also the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance," said Minister Yoon.

Related to the 1 million car production city project, MOTIE?has shown a lukewarm attitude so far for the project is in its early stage of planning and Hyundai and Kia Motors have not stated their positions clearly. Nonetheless, Minister Yoon expressed an active position at the meeting, giving a green light to the project.

The 1 million car production city project worth KRW 830 billion must pass the preliminary feasibility study at the governmental level and if the project is regarded as the subject for the preliminary feasibility study through the preliminary review of MOTIE in July, the technical evaluation of Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, the review of Ministry of Strategy and Finance (in December) and the study results will be announced during the first half of next year.
