(GWANGJU=NEWSIS) The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) selected the Nam district of Gwangju as the tourism city of the year for 2017.

The city announced January 19 that the Nam district has been selected as the tourism city of the year for 2017 along with Gangneung City and Goryeong County by the MCST. The ministry will invest KRW 5 billion in the selected places until 2017.

The tourism city of the year is a project that began last year to develop the areas that have both the cultural assets and natural environment into tourism cities. After receiving investment and counseling for two years, the selected areas will be declared as tourism cities in the relevant year.

The cities that were designated as the tourism city of the year for 2016 include Jecheon City, Muju County and Tongyeong City.

The Nam district will invest KRW 5 billion in developing contents and products and improving accommodations and other environment and facilities. The city plans to make the Nam district the best tourism city in Korea through extensive PR and marketing activities.
