Topographical and Geological Features
Centered on Halla Mountain which sits at the center of the island, Jeju boasts an elaborate natural landscape including forests and valleys full of wildlife, volcanic cones (known as oreum) and craters, lava tubes, and grasslands. Surrounded by the sea, Jeju boasts breathtaking coastal scenery composed of oddly formed rocks, falls, sandy beaches, and islets.
Halla Mountain has a gentle slope of approximately 3 to 5 degree along the east-west direction.
Rocks typical of Jeju include sedimentary rocks, volcanic rocks such as basalt, and pyroclastic rocks formed by volcanic explosions. Aside from clay and sandy soil in some areas, most areas of the island are covered with soil composed of dark brown volcanic ash.
