According to Yonhap News,

(DAEGU=Yonhap News) Korea's first electric freight car factory will be built in Daegu's national industrial complex.

On May 17, Zein Motors will hold a completion ceremony for their 17,000㎡ electric freight car factory built on a 40,000㎡ lot within the Daegu National Industrial Complex.

The company will also showcase the test drive of their new, 1 ton electric freight car "Calmato" due out in the second half of this year.

According to Zein Motors, the company has an annual capacity of 3000 vehicles.

Ulsan's automotive parts company DIC is an electric vehicle manufacturer that produces electric freight cars by converting 1 ton porters.

The company has applied for an electric freight car certification to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Should the certification process go according to plans, the companies can start the production and sales of the Calmato in the second half of this year.

The Calmato will be supplied to courier companies first, then to regular consumers at a later date.

The city of Daegu has invested KRW 14 billion into leading future automotive technologies in the past 4 years and has been supporting Daegu companies' electric and autonomous vehicle R&D activities since 2016.

In order to help the initial sales of the electric freight cars, the company signed agreements to distribute electric cars with logistics companies such as Coupang and Lotte Global Logistics.
