(DAEGU=Yonhap News) Daegu City was selected for the 2018 Nurturing Project for Public Institutions in Innovation City organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on July 31.

This Project aims to enhance competitiveness of new growth industry by creating an innovation ecosystem linked with local innovative resources based on the capability of public institutions relocated to new cities.

The City plans to create an innovation ecosystem for converged medical industry that utilizes capability of the public institutions relocated to Sinseo innovation new town in Daegu and the function of the High-tech Medical Complex by investing a total of 16.5 billion won for 5 years by 2022.

Since December 2015 up until now, 12 public institutions finished their relocation to Daegu.

Kyungpook National University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation will establish an Open Lab on the 6th floor of Institute of Advanced Convergence Technology building in the innovation city for this Project.

It will also support innovation product development and business reinforcement by using digital manufacturing facilities, such as existing 3D printers, together with National Information Society Agency, Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, Korea Education & Research Information Service, Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology, Daegu Gyeongbuk Medical Innovation Foundation and Daegu Technopark.

A city official said, "We are expecting that focusing on nurturing converged medical industry with the innovation city as the center will contribute to nurturing local new industry and creating decent jobs."
