Daegu selected for 'National Robot Test Field' winning in competition of 6 local governments

The Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement (KIRIA) said on August 13 that it finally selected a site in Daegu city as a site for 'National Robot Test-field Innovation Project.'

The KIRIA announced public competition for a project site received applications from local governments on June 21.

Six local governments including Seoul, Busan, Gwangju, Gyeongnam, and Chungnam submitted a business plan. The site selection evaluation committee selected the Yong-ri, Yuga-eup, Dalseong-gun, Daegu area in consideration of location condition and local government support, among others.

The National Robot Test Field Innovation Project aims to support creation of new market for service robots and facilitation of commercialization by establishing a certification system and the infrastructure based on real environment, as well as innovation of service robot regulation.

It is a large-scale national project investing KRW 30 billion in total for 7 years starting from 2023, supporting establishment of a robot data center and test field (KRW 160 billion), and common basic technology development for service robots (KRW 140 billion).

Once the National Robot Test Field is built in Daegu, a series of robot business support system will be established, encompassing research and development, demonstration and regulatory improvement, test-bed operation, and commercialization support, through the KIRIA, the Korea Institute of Robotics & Technology Convergence, and Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science & Technology, among others.

An official from Daegu said, "Daegu is expected to grow into a leading city in the robot industry, with 662 robot companies, 11,799 employees, and sales of KRW 4.1 trillion by 2023."
