The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced on September 21 that Seoul, Daejeon, Busan, and Daegu were selected as the World Intellectual Property Organization's "Top 100 Science and Technology (S&T) Cluster" in 2023.
WIPO has identified and ranked the geographical areas around the world with the highest density of science and technology activity by combining patent-filing activity and scientific article publication since 2017.
In 2023, The world’s five biggest S&T clusters are all located in East Asia.
Tokyo-Yokohama (Japan) were selected as the biggest S&T clusters, followed by Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou (Hong Kong, China).
Seoul, ranked third, moved up one notch from fourth place last year, followed by China’s Beijing and Shanghai-Suzhou clusters.
An official from the KIPO said, "Top 100 S&T Cluster Ranking shows that Korea is making intensive efforts to establish an innovative ecosystem," adding, "we will cooperate closely with the science and technology sectors to help expanding the innovative ecosystems."
