According to Yonhap News,

The 2012 Congress for Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP), an international bioscience cooperative organization among governments, is to be held from the first day of July at Daegu EXCO.

About 250 scientists from 35 countries will participate in the congress to report their study results and share information.

The congress is an annual closed-door event where HFSP awards scientists for their academic achievements, held for the first time in Italy in 2001. Selected scientists are granted scholarship and fellowship.

HFSP was first created in 1989 with the suggestion of former Japanese Prime Minister Nakasone to support basic science research especially focusing on human brain and body. It started with G7 countries but has expanded to 14 member countries including Korea.

The program has thus far supported about 5,500 scientists from 60 countries. Among them, 18 were awarded the Nobel Prize, which enhances the reputation of the program, being also dubbed as "Nobel Prize Fund."

Daegu City has decided to install and operate a promotion booth in front of the event venue to let participants know the growing status of Daegu as a state-of-the-art medical and science city.

Daegu Mayor Kim Beom-il expressed high hopes for the success of the congress, saying that "We will use the event as an opportunity to promote our on-going projects including Daegu-Gyeongbuk Comprehensive Cutting-Edge Medical Complex and Korea Brain Research Institute. The congress is expected to strengthen competitiveness of regional scientists and take our medical industry to the next level."
