(SEOUL = Yonhap News) Medi•City Daegu will hold the completion ceremony of the government’s core research installations including New Drug Development Center, Medical Device Development Center, Laboratory Animal Center and Clinical Drug Manufacturing Center.

The development of infrastructure took four years since Medi•City was established in Daegu in 2009.

Operation of these installations starting from next year is expected to greatly develop the health care industry, the country’s new growth engine.

These new research institutes will secure excellent research manpower and nation’s top equipment for the development of new drugs and high tech medical machineries in an attempt to become a hub for Korea’s high tech medical industry.

The New Drug Development Center is located in the Medi•City Daegu with the size of 22,998㎡.

The center will realize the commercialization of new drugs by supporting optimization and analysis of new drug candidates.

It also seeks to promote joint research with the nation’s various universities, ventures and pharmaceutical companies to develop new drug candidates.

Medical Device Development Center, which will have a gross floor area of 10,887㎡, will support the development of image-based and IT-oriented medical appliances.

It aims to provide One-Stop Total Solution service for commercialization of the medical apparatus.

The center is now currently carrying out a joint research with partners from academic, industrial backgrounds along with hospitals to develop IT-based fused medical apparatus, biometric data diagnostic apparatus, restoration apparatus which target cardio-cerebrovascular disease, geriatric disease and cancer.

Laboratory Animal Center, which is of 8,696㎡ gross floor area, is the institute to support the animal research.

It has animal experiment area for the development of medical apparatus and small-to-big animal operating room on the first floor. On the second floor it there will be experiment room for small-size animals and biomedical image analysis area.

It plays pivotal role of supporting animal experiments for the development of new medical apparatus, secure and stable supply of value added animal models and cultivation of new professional manpower.

Clinical Drug Manufacturing Center, with the gross floor area of 8,955㎡, will support pharmaceutical companies or research institutes which are not able to establish own medical production facilities by producing and supplying specimen of non-clinical and clinical medicines.

It also supports domestic pharmaceutical enterprises with the development of the medical analysis method and optimization of the manufacturing process by conducting business that analyzes the global guidelines for new drugs development and quality controls.
