(ULSAN=Yonhap News) A team of South Korean researchers has won this year's IEEE William R. Bennett Prize, a top award in the communications and networking sector, for its paper on the performance of mobile data offloading, a South Korean engineering university said Wednesday.

The Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology said the recipients of the award are the South Korean school's professor Lee Kyung-han, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology professors Yi Yung and Chong Song, and Samsung Electronics Co's mobile business developer Rhee In-jong.

Out of the four, Lee, Chong and Rhee were also awarded the 2013 prize.

Given by the Communications Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the William R. Bennett Prize is awarded annually for the best original paper published in any journal financially sponsored or co-sponsored by the society in the previous three calendar years.

IEEE is the world's largest gathering of technical professionals with a core purpose to foster technical innovation for the benefit of humanity and has 430,000 members in more than 160 countries.

The paper written by the South Korean team and published in 2013 is titled "Mobile Data Offloading: How Much Can WiFi Deliver?," which presents a quantitative study on the performance of 3G mobile data offloading through WiFi networks. It has been cited more than 500 times since its publication.

IEEE plans to confer the prize on the four at this year's international conference on communications, scheduled for May 24 in Kuala Lumpur.
