According to Yonhap News,
(ULSAN=Yonhap News) Ulsan will set out on a project to be a leading city in water circulation.
The project is about removing concrete pavement to allow rainwater to filter through the ground and planting vegetation or making waterways instead in order to create more eco-friendly environment.
The project will be implemented in Samho-dong through 2019, injected with KRW 9.6 billion including KRW 4.8 billion fund from the central government.
Following the initiative, Ulsan will build drainage ditches, rain gardens, and vegetated area, and promote rooftop greening.
Along with such efforts, the city will enact water circulation ordinances requiring establishment of rainwater management facility for construction work or city development projects.
The city expects more eco-friendly water circulation system will reduce nonpoint pollution sources and greenhouse gas and mitigate urban heat island effect, making the city more climate resilient.
Earlier last year, the Ministry of Environment designated Ulsan, Gwangju, Daejeon, Gimhae, and Andong as five leading cities of water circulation.
