According to Yonhap News,

(ULSAN=Yonhap News) Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) will develop core technology for decommissioning nuclear power plants.

The opening ceremony for the institute's Center for Core and Fundamental Nuclear Decontainment and Decommissioning (D&D) Research took place March. 3.

The new center will analyze possible operation errors during nuclear decommissioning, and develop technologies for safely removing cesium ions from nuclear waste.

In order to raise the safety levels of nuclear reactor site environments upon dismantlement, the center will also conduct research on how to investigate and monitor the radiation levels of the soil and underground water supplies in the area.

UNIST plans to cooperate with other universities and professional research institutions in Korea to hire the best research talent and build necessary infrastructure for researching nuclear decommissioning.

The center was built with funding through the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning's Advanced Nuclear Technology Center Project. For research activities, the ministry will provide a maximum of KRW 3.15 for up to 5 years, while the Ulsan City and Ulju County are set to offer KRW 1 billion.
