According to Yonhap News,

(ULSAN=Yonhap News) Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) has been selected to carry out research for the government project to develop technology for ultra-long-life secondary lithium batteries and cell processing.

The institute has secured a total budget of KRW 5.6 billion from the national government, the City of Ulsan, and Korea East-West Power Company to energize the energy storage system (ESS) industry for the next 4 years.

In a BoT (battery of things) era where everything is run on batteries, ESS is a promising future industry that will maximize energy efficiency and enable a stable supply of power.

As of present, however, high productions costs are getting in the way of commercialization.

In carrying out the project, UNIST's Secondary Battery Industry-Academia Research Center plans to develop innovative battery materials to double the life of commercial batteries, conducting joint research with Seoul National University (anodes), Umicore (anodes), SJ New Materials (cathodes), and Chunbo Fine Chemicals (electrolytes).
