According to Yonhap News,

(ULSAN=Yonhap News) A group of scientists at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) have developed a method that instantly kills airborne viruses using vacuum ultraviolet (VUV), a state-run institute said Friday, a development that could be a boon to air purifier technology.

UNIST said the team led by Jang Jae-sung, a material engineering professor, developed an air disinfection system that uses VUV to destroy MS2 viruses.

There has been considerable progress in UV-based disinfection methods, but conventional methods usually require long "irradiation" periods to be effective.

"This system has the potential to be an alternative to conventional UV-based air purifiers," Jang said.

He said that the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system used by hospitals or large public places will be able to quickly and effectively neutralize airborne viruses if they make use of the newly developed system.
