Ulsan to Lead Popularization of Genome Industry by Hosting the First Genome Expo in Korea

(ULSAN=Yonhap News) Genome Expo 2018 is to be held in Ulsan to popularize genome industry.

Academic seminars on genome were held in Korea, but Ulsan's Expo is the first exhibition held along with various programs.

Ulsan City announced on August 8 that the City, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), Korea Genomics Industrialization and Commercialization Center (KOGIC) and Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency is hosting Genome Expo 2018 on August 31 and September 1 at UNIST.

"Genome" is a synthesis word of "gene" and "chromosome" and is the complete set of genetic information in an organism.

The City planned to organize this event in order to successfully implement Genome Korea Ulsan Project which the city hosts, and to help popularize the industry.

Experts in genome will be invited to international seminars and genome technical seminars and share research outcomes and commercialization technology under the theme of Popularization of Genome Information and Genome Industry.

Furthermore, the event will include prediction of the industrialization of genome businesses, publicity of Genome Korea Project outcomes and highlighting the city image as a genome hub city.

Lectures at the seminar will be held on the first day, and genome exhibition booths and experience events will be presented throughout the Expo period.

On the second day, lectures by genome experts and companies, lectures for the public under the theme of "My future viewed through genome", investment lectures on investment and strategy in Korea's genome industry, and one on one consulting sessions between investors and businesses.

The City opened a website (http://genomeexpo.com) for the public.

"Genome Expo will be effective for the industrialization of the genome technology in the early stage and see promotional effect for Ulsan to occupy the domestic genome market," said a city official, "It will also gain a synergy effect for hosting international conferences including Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and the International Plant & Animal Genome (PAG) Conference."
