According to Yonhap News,
(ULSAN=Yonhap News)Ulsan City initiated preparations to establish a national experience-based science museum, with the target of opening in 2023.
Ulsan city announced that it will hold a briefing session on launching the planning and research work for the future science museum, attended by those involved from Ulsan Techno Park and research institutes.
The briefing session will cover the feasibility analysis to see if it fits the Ministry of Science and ICT's plan for science museum, profit model, technology evaluation, and preliminary feasibility study.
Ulsan city plans to build the science museum by committing about KRW 200 billion (national budget of KRW 150 billion, city budget of KRW 50 billion) by 2023.
It is pushed for as the city falls behind other cities and provinces in cultural facilities.
The city government expects the future science museum will improve quality of life of citizens in Ulsan, an industrial city focused on manufacturing business, providing less chance for cultural life, and contribute to developing talent in science
The museum is planned to be built on a site of 100,000㎡ and gross floor area of 30,000㎡. It will be built and operated as a national science museum under the MSIT.
The city plans to apply for technology evaluation and preliminary feasibility study in June-July this year.
Then it will hold a policy forum and briefing session to have active communication with citizens, followed by embarking on preliminary and detailed design.
The city government aims to differentiate with existing science museums by preparing various Halls allowing visitors to experience R&D, future jobs, and industries.
The city government informed the MSIT of its plan in the second half of last year.
It also suggested the MSIT incorporates provision of KRW 4 billion support for preliminary and detailed design in 2019 and establishment of Ulsan's future science museum to MSIT's fourth master plan for promoting science museum.
A city official said "this future science museum is a theme-based one, equipped with contents differentiated from the existing science museums".
