Ulsan begins establishing roadmap for the shipbuilding industry

(ULSAN=Yonhap News) Ulsan city announced on February 27 that it embarks on establishing a roadmap (implementation plan by step) to secure competitive edge in the shipbuilding industry and overcome the recession.

The city held a conference to establish a roadmap for strategic development of the shipbuilding industry, participated by 20 attendees from 8 organizations including UNIST and Ulsan Techno Park.

The conference contained a report on the industry trend home and abroad, policy direction by Ulsan city, introduction of new shipbuilding-related projects by relevant organizations, and discussion.

Participants expected the global recession in the shipbuilding industry will be slightly lifted, but fierce competition to clinch a shipbuilding order in the recovery stage.

Also, as the future shipbuilding industry is reshaping towards smart and eco-friendly ships, a comprehensive leadership at the national level was called for to establish a solid position in the market.

In reflection of such views, the city is set to establish a step-by-step implementation plan with visions of securing unchangeable technology in eco-friendly smart ships, strengthening competitiveness of small and mid size companies, and improving capabilities to respond to global crisis.

The city plans to hold a ceremony to announce Ulsan's vision for future shipbuilding industry in April.

A city official said, "We will make up structural deficiency of the industry through strategic policy implementation, and push for with policies to turn the shipbuilding industry more future-oriented, in order to maintain Ulsan's the shipbuilding powerhouse status".
