(ULSAN=Yonhap News) R&D Center for 3D printing manufacturing process of next-generation ship and energy parts will be established in Ulsan.

In total, KRW 23 billion (national budget of KRW 10 billion, city budget of KRW 11 billion, and KRW 2 billion from the private sector) will be invested.

The R&D Center will be composed of two buildings - research building, and pilot plant- on the land area of 2,054㎡ -with its construction due to be complete in December this year.

The research center will be equipped with 3D scanner room, research room, and meeting room, while pilot plant will have 3D printing devices room, lab, and after-treatment room.

Main roles will be supporting companies with development of production process technology and new products, pilot project production and manufacturing, and reliability test of materials and components.

In particular, Ulsan Techno Industrial Complex will see a number other specialized centers built up, from 2020, such as 3D printing venture concentrated knowledge industrial center, and materials commercialization 3D printing quality assessment center.

As a result, Korea's largest industry-academia-research cluster in 3D printing will be established in Ulsan Techno Industrial Complex, in connection with UNIST, Ulsan university, and companies. .

Ulsan city official said, "The establishment of this R&D center will stimulate the formation of 3D printing industry's foundation," adding that "concentration of 3D printing-related institutions in Ulsan Techno Industrial Park will be an opportunity for Ulsan to lead domestic 3D printing industry".
