On August 13, Ulsan city held "Korea-UK Workshop on exchange of decommissioning technology" at Lotte Hotel, Ulsan to secure a stepping stone to go global in the world decommissioning market.
The workshop was participated by about 70 attendees including Deputy Ambassador Nick Metha at the British Embassy in Seoul, President Lee Jeong-hwan of Advanced Manufacturing Research Center Korea, Professor Neil C Hyatt of University of Sheffield, and those from academia and industry.
Taking advantage of the announcement to foster nuclear decommissioning in June, the city has pushed for exchange system and discovery of new projects connecting academia-research-industry home and abroad to facilitate the nuclear decommissioning industry.
Ulsan-si held this workshop to promote domestic decommissioning technology and secure a stepping stone to go global by inviting British companies with world-class decommissioning technology, providing a venue to exchange technology know-how with Korean companies.
This workshop is also a part of the government's program supporting specialized small but competitive companies in the decommissioning sector with potential to go global by 2031 in accordance with a roadmap to cultivate decommissioning.
The workshop touched on the introduction of Korea and British decommissioning industry, cooperative measures, the status of British decommissioning industry and research on radioactive waste management, remote-control of high-level radioactive waste materials, and the status of heavy water reactor decommissioning in the U.K., among others.
The British Deputy Ambassador said in an opening speech, "U.K. is one of the leading countries in decommissioning filed, with a long history of nuclear plant development and decommissioning," adding that "As Korea is also demonstrating strong will for technology export as a leading country in nuclear development research, we hope to have enhanced cooperative relationship in the decommissioning field."
