An action plan will be established to overcome the slowdown of the shipbuilding industry and to build the world’s top shipbuilding industry as the industry’s global leader.

On Oct. 21 at 2pm at the international conference room of the main building of Ulsan City Hall, Ulsan city government holds a kickoff meeting to announce a step-by-step action plan for the strategic development of the future shipbuilding industry at the presence of Park Sun-cheol, the chief of the city government’s Innovative Industry Bureau and more than twenty officials from fifteen organizations including the Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency, the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute, the Ulsan Development Institute and Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The step-by-step development strategy and action plans defined for detail areas will be presented at the kickoff meeting, followed by a Q&A session with the participants.

According to the kickoff meeting document, the worldwide slump of the shipbuilding industry is projected to be partially resolved as of the second half of 2019, but the race to win orders in the recovery phase will be more intense than ever.

There are calls for the future shipbuilding industry to be restructured with the focus on environmentally-friendly smart ships so that Ulsan can claim its unfaltering status as the center of the global shipbuilding industry.

Accordingly, Ulsan for the development of the shipbuilding and marine industry seeks to reform the industry’s ecosystem by strategically pursuing policies for win-win and at the same time building a cutting-edge shipbuilding industry that is smart and environmentally-friendly, thereby emerging as the global leader of the shipbuilding and marine industry.

The action plan envisions creating a state-of-the-art innovation valley for the shipbuilding and marine industry, pioneering the next-generation shipbuilding R&D, laying the foundation (infrastructure) for conducting innovative and cutting-edge R&D tests, building a city specialized in shipbuilding and marine-related content, and formulating a global network for the cooperation within the shipbuilding and marine industry.

Ulsan will complete the commissioned project in March 2020 and start implementing the detail action plans.

Ulsan’s key shipbuilding and marine industry projects include Industry4.0s converging ICT, Shipbuilding and Marine Software Cluster, Construction and Demonstration of Electric-Powered Smart Ships, Construction of a Test Drive Center for Autonomous Smart Ships, and 5G-based Shipbuilding and Marine Smart Communication Platform and Convergence Service Development.
