Ulsan ciy signed an MOU to become a mecca of 3D printing solutions

At the presence of chief industry bureaus of the city government, the city of Ulsan signed a memorandum of understanding on Apr. 9 with dozens of business leaders and entrepreneurs in demand of 3D printing technology under the shared goals of technology transfer and business partnership, through which industrial and institutional entities work together to form solidarity.

Main agenda stipulated in the agreement include a plan, helping six small but highly competent hidden champions headquartered in Gyeonggi, Gyeongnam Provinces and Busan city share source technologies to those in need of support, along with two other issues to establish a new production plants and a top notch inspection /testing center in Asia.

In accordance with the partnership pact, one of the signees, specialized in aerospace products, reached a consensus to move into Ulsan technopark industrial cluster to scale up its production capacity. The new assembly line is reported to be decorated with ten different series of gigantic precision machines, which extend as much as 30m and worth nearly KRW 2.7billion.

Headquartered in Sweden, Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence, long developed and supplied sensors, software and autonomous solutions in cross-sectoral industries in Korea since 2004, also pledged to branch out and begin to open a new office in Ulsan city.

Glowinz, which has agreed upon the statement for technology transfer specified in the MOU, is a joint venture firm, co-founded by eight different entrepreneurs who’ve built up considerable expertise in 3D printing technology, precision engineering, Internet of Things(IoT) technology, software engineering etc. By forming a consortium, entitled 'OMT(Optimizing Manufacturing TEAM in ULSAN)', members have provided a comprehensive range of technical solutions for manufacturers for the first time ever in Korea.

All the members reaffirmed business alliance to build up a shared space for production facility to mass produce 3D printed consumer products, while opening separate office each inside the “3D Printing Venture Cluster” in Ulsan city, scheduled to break ground in October in an attempt to make the best use of infrastructure and resources in tech-intensive local clusters.

Taking this opportunity as a momentum, the city government plans to form a collaborative network organically in preparation for the soaring demand for 3D printing services in the upcoming period, while setting up industrial guidelines to be applied in practice, under which local businesses and venture startup firms have access to municipalities’ biz-support measures.
