According to Yonhap News,

Ulsan Metropolitan City announced a strategy to foster the battery industry, a next-generation growth engine. It also commenced the creation of after-use secondary battery utilization research center.

The city held a groundbreaking ceremony for 'EV battery industrialization center' at Techno General Industrial Complex in Namgu on October 13.

On the occasion, Ulsan-si announced the strategy to foster the battery industry in Ulsan, and signed MOUs with companies and organizations engaged in the secondary battery industry to foster the battery industry.

The strategy, which has the vision to become 'a base city for small but strong companies focused on the secondary battery industry', containing comprehensive support measures for life-cycle of the industry from basic battery manufacturing to applications.

Ulsan plans to enhance competitiveness by making most use of its capabilities in technological prowess, excellent growth conditions, and human resources.

To realize its vision, it will also push for 6 projects.

6 projects include ▲ support for development of next-generation/high-performing battery commercialization ▲ operate R&D special district focused on future battery ▲ foster specialized talent in the secondary battery ▲ build a support center for high-performance convergence chemical materials ▲ support for performance evaluation and certification of medium and large secondary battery ▲ establish EV battery industrialization center

By doing so, the city aims to lay the foundation for comprehensive support for life-cycle of secondary battery, attract world's small but strong companies based on R&D, and foster 200 specialized talents on an annual basis.

In particular, the city expects the project to build the center for EV battery industrialization, which broke ground on the day, will be a breakthrough project to lead the growth of local battery industry.

The center, in the scale of 2 above-ground floors and total area of 1,485㎡, is to carry out a project to reuse and recycle waste batteries from EVs after extracting, decomposing, selecting, evaluating, and reassembling.

It is expected to open up a new market, the after-use battery.

Once the construction of the center is completed early next year, it is expected to yield results in Energy Storage System, utilizing the features of secondary battery capable of recycling and reuse, Uninterruptible Power Supply system (UPS) in preparation for blackout or extraction of valuable metals (gold, silver, etc.)

The city will endeavor to expand the foundations of the battery industry by developing project models and fostering talent to utilize the post-use battery. To this end, the city signed the MOU on 'development of Ulsan's battery industry' with 3 organizations including Ulsan Technopark, and 15 local companies related with the secondary battery.
