Gwangju, Ulsan, Gangwon to jointly build the high-magnetic field infrastructure

Gwangju City signed a MOU with the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI), Ulsan City, and Gangwon Province on November 12 to establish a trans-regional national high-magnetic field research infrastructure.

The signing ceremony held at the KBSI headquarters in Daejeon was attended by Gwangju's mayor, Gangwon's governor, Ulsan's deputy mayor, and KBSI President.

The agreement was prepared to systematically and efficiently build the high magnetic field research infrastructure that KBSI and the three local governments had separately been pushing for.

KBSI provides comprehensive support for three regional research infrastructure, while each of three regions develop key technologies, such as new materials in Gwangju, energy in Ulsan energy, and medicine and bio in Gangwon.

High magnetic field research is a cutting-edge technology of basic science that is widely used in various fields and industries including biology, energy, and life sciences.

In particular, it is considered as one of the three core researches in modern condensed matter, along with synchrotron radiation and neutron scattering instrument.

When the high magnetic field research infrastructure is established, it will be possible to conduct R&D in a systematic way as the high-magnetic technologies hat had been dispersed among universities and research centers become integrated.

Gwangju-si has been endeavoring to attract national high-magnetic field research institutes since beginning planned research in 2016 in various ways such as signing the MOU with KBSI in June last year, holding 'Magnetic Applied Science and Technology Forum participated by Korea's leading experts,
