Ulsan-si to develop projects applying 3D printing to shipbuilding & marine

Ulsan-si said on February 8 that it would develop projects applying 3D printing technology to shipbuilding and marine areas.

11 organizations and companies including Ulsan IT Industy Promotion Agency, Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, Korea 3D Printing Fusion Technology Association, Korean Register, and Hyundai Heavy Industries.

As for joint R&D projects, they selected ship modeling, casting demonstration, 3D printer development for ships, and 3D printing ship equipment development.

The project to manufacture a scaled model, prior to shipbuilding, through 3D printing technology will be carried out with a goal for commercialization in June. Its finished product will be supplied to Hyundai Heavy Industries, etc.

The project to produce shipbuilding equipment and products through 3D printing technology will go through demonstration process, with a goal for commercialization in June next year, with an investment of KRW 5 billion by HK Steel.

Also, they will go for development of 3D printer for ships, allowing repair and replacement of major parts to be manufactured immediately in the vessel while in operation by investing KRW 3 billion for 3 years.

The project to develop 3D printing ship equipment is to reduce the weight and manufacturing cost of ship equipment to enhance productivity.

11 organizations and companies participating in the project signed an MOU at 3D printing venture knowledge industry center.
