According to Yonhap News,
(Ulsan=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Yong-tae = Ulsan's exports in August increased year-on-year, driven by strong performance in major key items, specifically petroleum products and petrochemicals.
According to the August import and export trends released by the Ulsan Customs Office on the 15th, export value rose 3.3 percent compared to the same month last year, reaching USD 7.83 billion (approx. KRW 10.41 trillion).
By commodity, export performances demonstrated significant sector-specific divergence.
Petroleum Products surged 68.8 percent year-on-year to USD 3.54 billion despite lower export volumes, bolstered by higher unit export prices.
Petrochemicals increased 12.0 percent year-on-year to USD 1.2 billion, also driven by unit price increases offsetting volume declines.
Automobiles dropped 49.8 percent to USD 990 million due to declining export shipments to major destination markets, including the United States.
Shipbuilding declined 46.8 percent to USD 580 million owing to a decrease in scheduled vessel deliveries.
Total import value grew 5.9 percent year-on-year to USD 5.85 billion, spurred by increased imports of key industrial inputs such as crude oil and petrochemical raw materials. Crude oil—the single largest import component—rose 15.1 percent to USD 3.67 billion as higher unit import costs outweighed reduced import volumes.
Consequently, Ulsan recorded a trade surplus of USD 1.98 billion (approx. KRW 2.63 trillion), extending its uninterrupted trade surplus streak to 143 consecutive months since October 2014.
