Korean companies expect to step up cooperation with Malaysian businesses in the green energy sector, the head of a leading local business organization said Tuesday.

“We want further cooperation (between the two countries’ companies) in the green energy sector such as in biofuels and batteries for electrical vehicles,” said Sohn Kyung-shik, chief of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), in a meeting with visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.

KCCI also hopes that companies of the two countries will enhance cooperation in the transportation and communication sector based on information and telecommunication technology, Sohn said.

In response, Najib said business leaders of both countries should play a pivotal role in expanding bilateral economic cooperation.

He also acknowledged that Korea and Malaysia have been developing relations in various areas since 1960 when they established diplomatic ties.

The meeting hosted by the chamber was attended by about 70 business leaders from the two countries.

The Malaysian prime minister started his three-day official visit here on Monday.
