South Korea's top automaker Hyundai Motor Co. said Thursday its flagship luxury
sedan Genesis topped a U.S. dependability ranking rated by a U.S. marketing
firm.
The Genesis was rated the most dependable car in the mid-size
premium car category in the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) by J.D. Power and
Associates, beating the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class
models.
The study measures problems experienced by original owners of
three-year-old vehicles. Dependability of an automaker is determined by the
level of problems experienced per 100 vehicles, with a lower score reflecting
higher reliability.
Hyundai Motor said the Genesis received 81 points
in the annual test, an all-time low for Hyundai Motor vehicles in the VDS. The
model won the North American Car of the Year in 2009.
The Avante,
called the Elantra in the United States, ranked third in the compact car
category with 106 points, following the Prius of Toyota Motor Corp. and the
Japanese company's Corolla.
The South Korean carmaker said it came
fourth in overall dependability ratings among general carmakers with 125 points,
outpacing Honda Motor Co. with 131 points and the Audi AG with 148.
The industry average of the VDS was 132 points, according to J.D.
Power.
