South Korea's finance minister will attend a meeting with his counterparts from
the group of 20 (G-20) countries in Mexico this week to discuss how to increase
global cooperation in tackling economic challenges, his office here said
Thursday.
The G-20 meeting of finance ministers will kick off its
two-day run in Mexico City on Saturday. Ranking officials of its member
countries and major international organizations will take part in the
gathering.
This is the first finance ministers' meeting to be chaired
by Mexico this year. Spain, Chile, Colombia, Cambodia and Benin were also
invited to join the meeting.
The G-20 meeting comes ahead of planned
summit talks, providing a chance to set the agenda to be discussed among leaders
when they meet in June in Los Cabos, Mexico.
Participants are expected
to exchange views on the latest global economic situations such as the eurozone
debt problems, while discussing how to step up cooperation in dealing with
worldwide economic turmoil, the finance ministry here said in a press
release.
Other topics will be how to improve member countries' fiscal
soundness, strengthen the crisis surveillance capacity of the International
Monetary Fund, ease volatility of raw material prices and cooperate in pushing
for "green growth."
South Korea's Finance Minister Bahk Jae-wan is to
hold bilateral talks with his counterparts from Mexico, Germany, Japan,
Indonesia and Singapore. During the talks, he will exchange views on diverse
global economic issues, according to the ministry.
South Korea also
plans to sign a memorandum of understanding with Mexico to cooperate in sharing
its development know-how through the so-called "Knowledge Sharing Program," the
ministry added.
