Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., a leading South Korean builder, said
Monday that it has won a US$350 million wastewater treatment plant project in
Colombia.
The deal awarded by Colombia's multi-utility EPM calls for
the construction company to build and operate the Bello water treatment plant in
the suburbs of Medellin, the Latin American country's second-largest
city.
The plant, located 240 kilometers northwest of the capital
Bogota, will be designed to treat 430,000 tons of wastewater per day.
Hyundai said it secured the deal as part of a consortium with Spain's Acciona
Agua S.A.
The builder said work should start this year and be
completed by 2015, or in about 48 months.
The latest contract is
expected to help Hyundai Construction expand its market presence in Latin
America. It completed work on Brazil's Porto Velho combined cycle power plant in
2003, which won it regional recognition as a first rate builder.
The
company, which belongs to Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fifth-largest
automaker, said it wants to secure $10 billion worth of fresh construction
orders this year.
