Leading global law firm Ropes & Gray has announced plans to open an office in Korea. The company, which specializes in intellectual property law, will file a preliminary review with the Ministry of Justice.
Ropes & Gray was founded in 1865 and has a history of successfully representing the world's greatest inventors, including Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, the Wing Brothers and the Henry Ford. It represented the plaintiffs in a landmark patent case in which the Lemelson Foundation's asserted machine-vision and bar-code technology patents were ruled unenforceable.
The firm also represented Polaroid in the landmark damages trial of Polaroid v. Kodak, which resulted in a $925 million damages award. It is representing clients including Motorola, Google, genzyme, LG, Hyundai, Hanjin and NCsoft in patent infringement actions.
Rope & Gray has about 1,100 lawyers in 10 offices around the world. It
is one of several U.S. law firms that have been eyeing Korea's legal market
since the ratification of the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement.
