South Korea's finance minister will attend the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank this week to discuss cooperation in dealing with eurozone debt problems and the growing risks of a global slowdown, his office said Wednesday.

Bahk Jae-wan will leave for Tokyo Thursday to participate in the IMF/World Bank annual meeting, which will kick off on the same day for a four-day run, according to the finance ministry.

In his keynote speech, Bahk will emphasize the need to cooperate in preventing the global economy from falling into recession and laying the groundwork for sustainable growth in the long term, the ministry said.

He will also underline the importance of eurozone countries taking action to improve their fiscal health and call for non-eurozone countries to also enhance their fiscal soundness and strengthen the overall capacity to cope with such crises, it added.

During his stay, Bahk is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Japan, France, Denmark, Benin and Barbados to exchange views on the global economic conditions, according to the ministry.
