Korea Trade Investment Agency (KOTRA: president and CEO, Pyung-Oh, Kwon) and Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) co-hosted ‘2019 JOB FAIR(1:1 interview)’ on Nov 7 at the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas. This event, held especially during the week of ‘INVEST KOREA WEEK 2019’, is a sequel to the job fair that opened last June this year. The second round of the event put emphasis more on how to give practical support, helping job seekers, especially those who’ve passed reference check, go through in-depth interviewing process.

14 global giants who’ve appeared on the list of Fortune’s 500 and 95 world famous corporations including the Forbes’ 29 (29 from the US, 19 from Japan and 10 from Germany) joined to meet with capable candidates. Industry specifically, 24 manufacturers, 21 service providers, 19 wholesalers/ retailers, 10 telecommunications service providers and 7 pharmaceuticals also came to the event. In addition, 16 businesses involved in materials products / machine parts and equipment industry attended.

World’s largest chemical company, DuPont, and vacuum pump maker Edwards Korea Ltd., announced their employment plan this time to secure extra workforce in R&D centers. Prior to the fair, KOTRA conducted a survey asking foreign- funded companies in Korea about their future recruitment plan for the next six months till the end of this year. The result says approximately 950 positions will be newly added (sales 33.9%, R&D 13.3%, service 12.4%, ICT 11.4%, manufacturing 3.5%. *Market externalities can change the estimates referred hereinbefore* ). Not a small number of businesses (12%) shrugged off academic backgrounds of future candidates, whereas a majority of them (over 86%) seeking for new employees to work with turned out to want college graduates.

The total number of job seekers who applied online before the beginning of the event were reported to be over 4,500 and 800 of them, who passed the reference check process, had a chance to go to the next stage. Subsequent events such as business presentation sessions and a special lecture for the job hunters were flocked by hundreds of people. DuPont and a dozen more also joined the programs to give detailed information to the invitees. For those who’re not at the venue, KOTRA started to provide online access where job seekers watch a live video on Youtube.

The CEO, Pyung-Oh, Kwon, said “FDI has been an essential part of our economy as 11.9% of sales, 5.7% of employment and 19.1% of export all come from foreign-funded businesses in Korea. Still, there are small, unknown but strong companies are out there. Hope that this fair can become the perfect matching platform where job seekers and these businesses can meet with.”
