Reasons for Proposal
The current Act requires food, food additives or livestock products to be labeled with the product name, warnings for consumer safety, and the date of manufacture, sell-by date or best before date.
However, the “Labeling Standards for Food, Etc.,” a notice under the current Act, allows ice creams, frozen desserts, and edible ice to be labeled with only the date or month of manufacture and omit the sell-by date, raising concerns over the hygiene and safety thereof.
Therefore, the Amendment aims to stipulate that the label be required to include the sell-by date in the labeling standards for ice deserts, etc., to guarantee consumers’ rights to know and contribute to quality improvement (Article 4-2 newly inserted).
